Posters are among the most common art forms. You probably had a few of them on your wall as a child. They cover the full spectrum of people, places, and events.

They also serve as an inspiration for web designers. Their use of color and typography is part of how we see the world. We can see the impact all over the web.

What’s more, we can recreate and enhance the experience online. Goodies like 3D effects and animation bring posters to life. There’s also an element of interactivity. That can be just as powerful as a bold layout.

We wanted to see how designers are using their creativity. So, we perused the archives of CodePen for beautiful poster art. Here are some examples that use CSS, JavaScript, and other technologies. Enjoy!

Talk about a poster that’s brimming with life! This 3D rendering places the movie’s characters in a cut-out. The entire presentation looks like a diorama. Everything is powered by CSS – no JavaScript in sight.

A New Take on a Classic Art Form

The examples above combine classic print sensibilities with online capabilities. It’s a fun exercise that goes beyond what’s hanging on your wall.

We may think of posters as being simplistic. But they also open a world of possibilities for designers. Thus, we can take this inspiration and run with it.

For example, posters may help us rethink traditional web layouts. Elements like vertical text and unique container shapes come to mind. They can serve as a launching pad for ideas.

hello! Going through a bit of a potc phase (again again) and was wondering if you have any norribeth fic/author recs?💚

This is dreadfully late, but I finally have a list for you! I kept meaning to put this together, but each time I looked through my bookmarks, I realized how many of these I’d saved to my bookmarks intending to read and then never got around to reading (for shame). So I went on a Norribeth binge and finally checked off some of the fics on my to-read list. These are all of varying degrees of shippy-ness and one-sided attraction and maybe-requited feelings.

I’ll rec anything @boltlightning and @tortoisesshells write, but here’s a few of theirs to start with:

steadfast and dependable by @boltlightning (T, 6.4k):

James Norrington keeps his word: when Will Turner cannot be pardoned for his crimes, he sets the smith free to save his life. Elizabeth Swann keeps her word: when James Norrington fulfills the terms of their engagement, she marries him. Neither of them want this, yet neither can back out. They make the most of the situation, all until Cutler Beckett comes to the Caribbean to bargain for a compass. (or: an AU leading into DMC, where Norrington and Elizabeth marry, and Will escapes with Jack)

Suffer A Sea Change by @tortoisesshells (T, 5.3k):

Between Rumrunner's Isle and Isla de Muerta, Elizabeth Swann and James Norrington independently realize how far beyond their respective understandings of the world they’ve travelled, and grapple with the futures they're choosing. Jack Sparrow is not quite as unhelpful in this as he might be.

Okay, didn't get off to a great start.

Friday I was just plain exhausted. Saturday I was travelling and didn't get home till super late. Today has been nuts + serious procrastination and fear of opening all these old WIPs. I finally opened one a little before midnight and got 546 words. I'll take it. I will say, if I were doing Nano proper I would have been more disciplined and written through all of those hurdles, so I need to pull my bootstraps up. Currently 4455 words behind where I should be.

Snippet Sunday

I was tagged by @persephotea for this. I did not follow in her foot steps, so this isn't smutty, however, it's one of my favorite scenes that I've written recently.

He loved her for how different she was from him, for all the subtle kindnesses she would bestow onto those around. Perhaps that is where he started failing in his cons. Frank Fontaine, however, needed a caretaker for the Little Sister’s Orphanage, and who better to care for the orphaned girls than his beloved secretary Suki Wagner. She would not ask any questions, and the kids would feel as though they had a mother. It would also free Mr. Fontaine up enough to get his work back on track. Dr. Tenenbaum, however, would need to either find a way to hide her hatred for the secretary, or at least deal with working with her.

“Mr. Fontaine, you called for me?”

Suki’s silken robe flowed in the self-propelled wind as she rounded the office’s door. Normally she would not have appeared in such disarray, but Frank had sent one of his men to her home with an urgent message. Something he rarely did, which would have prompted her provocative appearance. For a moment he contemplated taking her right then and there, watching as her bosom moved with her deep breaths. She had run all the way to his office, he suspected.

“Yes, Dr. Lamb has inspired me.” He breathed, standing up from behind his desk.

“Oh… in which way?” Suki hummed, tightening the hold on her robe.

“I wanted to open a few places to help the lower classes of Rapture.” He paused, still making his way to Suki with a happy grin.

            Though he looked dead serious, Ms. Wagner’s eyes searched for the angle in his demeanor. Fontaine disagreed with many of Andrew Ryan’s beliefs, however they both held fast on to the bootstrap’s mantra. They both believed in making oneself without the help of others, so why the change in heart. Was it not yesterday that Frank tittered at the incarceration of the Therapist?

“I wanted to open up a home for the poor, and perhaps an orphanage.” His usual smirk touched his features, as he pulled her into his body.

            Frank smelled of Vetiver, and sandalwood, the scents he had asked Suki to find for him. At first, she had not been a fan of the earthy smell of Vetiver but having to breath it whenever she was around Frank helped it grow on her. Even being a minor source of arousal at times. Suki hummed feeling his arms slide down to the curve of her elbow, the action opening her robe a bit more. Enough to expose the lacy low-cut neckline of her nightgown.

“And you’ve called for me because?”

“I want you to be in charge of the orphanage.”

            His lips grazed the shell of her ear, the faint smell of a smoked cigarette filling her lungs as he hugged her firmly against him. The touch seemed so…. Intimate. Almost as if he were restraining himself, though losing the battle as well.

“I… Tomorrow the two of us will be searching open venues.” He breathed, clearing his throat momentarily. “Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, and an outfit that will do well with the movement.”

“Will do, thank you Mr. Fontaine.”

            There it was again, the distancing of proper etiquette. Frank both loved and hated it at the same time. Suki’s quite properness helped keep the naughtier thoughts of his buried deep inside, however, it also begged him to slowly corrupt her. He would kill to hear her call him Frank, no mister, no surnames, just his name. Hell, he would want her to call him by his true surname, if he could remember the damned thing himself. But Frank, that was real, the only bit of self he kept throughout the years. Though the question of when he would toss that aside too, dangled heavily in his mind.

“Suki…. One more thing.” Frank half cursed, having called her for her attention again. “Call me Frank, at least when we are alone.”

“Good night, Frank.” She smiled, going back to the door. “Go home sir. You have spent far too much time here.”
